In Memory

Margaret Hanson

Margaret (Margie) Hanson, a resident of Albuquerque since 2014, died August 9, 2021 at the age of 70.

As an avid reader with an adventurous spirit, Margie pursued her love of literature, history, and travel through a BA at St. Olaf College, study abroad programs at the Universities of Cambridge and Hamburg, travel throughout Europe, and stints living in Alaska and Colorado. She spent much of her adult life in Wichita, KS as an Engineering Manager at Beechcraft where she was highly regarded for her sharp wit, sense of humor, and attention to detail in developing bids and proposals for the production of aircraft used by the US Air Force and Navy. Margie was also an enthusiastic ballooner and skilled weaver. She celebrated the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for many years and generously shared her passion for the fiber arts with others as the secretary of Las Arañas Spinners and Weavers Guild.

Margie is survived by her mother, Kathryn Hanson; sister, Barbara (Dean) Benforado; nieces, Laura (Jake)
Hanson Schlachter, Elizabeth (Stephen) Tavasci, and Emily (James) Behnke; nephew, Tyler Hanson; and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Hanson, and brother, David Hanson.

Interment took place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Mankato, MN on September 5, 2021 followed by a family gathering. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Betsy-Tacy Society near Margie's childhood home at https://betsy-tacysociety.org/join-contribute/. I'm not able to pick out Margaret Hanson in this photo, although I'd be very surprised if she was not part of this class play production.

Otherwise it's a great opportunity to revisit Bruce Boevers a year and a half after he got his Distinguished Alumni award.

Starting in kindergarten at Washington Elementary, Margaret became a staple in our lives. And, several of us were also Campfire Girls with her in the same troop. She was more mature than most of us and provided role modeling for us. I always looked to her with awe and respect.

It was clear to everyone that Margaret was one of THE smartest in our classes all the way through grade school, Franklin Junior High, and MHS. While at Washington, a teacher (I think sixth grade) asked us to report on how many books we had read during the school year. Most of us said between 2-4. Margaret said 65! I was dumbfounded and instantly felt inadequate. Holy buckets! 65 "chapter books"! Quite the feat. It challenged me to read more and do to this day. Margaret always set the bar higher for all of us when it came to academics and learning.

Rest In Peace with a good book while basking out in nature, Margaret. Thanks for being you.

I remember Margaret as others have remembered Margaret, as being a leader intellectually . She was quite amazing. As an adult I was lucky to know her when we both lived in "the Land of Enchantment" - New Mexico, and loved the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Margaret became a "Zebra" and an indespensable part of the Fiesta. Zebra's  are officially "launch directors" that serve as air traffic controllers for the pilots by helping them see traffic overhead, at their sides and above and below them. The Zebras wear black and white vertical striped jackets along with their whistles and communication sets- you don't mess with the Zebras! She loved every bit of being a part of the Fiesta. I am sure that she was amazing at that too.

I'm so saddened to hear of Margie's passing but the smiling photos were great to see. Margie and I became friends in the French Horn section of band. We had some great adventures together. When she finished her studies at Cambridge we met up and backpacked Europe. Train passes in hand ,we covered a lot of ground and had lots of fun. We also ventured to Alaska and worked and lived on an old merchant marine ship in Kodiak. In those days women worked on a line sorting shrimp but Margie broke the shrimp processing glass ceiling and ran the peelers !  She introduced me to The Betsy-Tacy books and I introduced them to my daughter and will to my granddaughter as well. Thanks Margie.
