Profile Updated: August 16, 2014
John Harrer
Residing In: Minneapolis, MN USA
Occupation: Dad, part time Montessori sub
Children: Libby Ellis, 1991, at Northern Michigan University, nordic skiing and occasionally studying... I hope.
Corky More…Harrer, 1992, 11th grade at Minneapolis Southwest, however in Norway for the year as an exchange student, also a nordic skier, and a budding twin tip downhill skier as well.
Update, 2014: Libby still not quite finished. Corky heading to junior year at Bates College.
Yes! Attending Reunion

I went to the "U" on the "extended study plan". I lived in Munich for a few years, came back to Mpls. for a while, moved to NYC for another few years, and returned once again to Mpls. I got married in 1989 and 2 years later discovered my true calling. Being a parent is fabulous... mostly. Of course in 2 years I'll have to decide what I want to do when I grow up. But so far I have avoided sticking a bobby pin in an electrical outlet, driving with my eyes closed, or getting trench foot, while succeeding in having my children roll their eyes and sigh heavily at me far too many times to count. So I am hopeful.
Update, 2014: Sadly divorced a couple of years ago. Been doing a part time Montessori school substitute staff gig. Heading back to Germany to visit friends in September. (The whole family lived there for a year in 2000.)

I never knew Gary as more than a face and a name, however I have believed in the truth of the lines from John Donne ever since I first read them:

No man is an island entire of itself; every man

is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;...

... any man's death diminishes me,

because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom

the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

We all grieve readily and understandably for the passing of one of celebrity, but forget too easily that the loss of one we may but pass in the crowd is a very real loss indeed. Rest in peace, Gary.
